Basic Handgun Instruction:
Currently all scheduled classes are full.

In addition to our Concealed Handgun License (CHL) classes, we do offer basic handgun instruction. This class is suitable for those that do not currently have an interest in obtaining a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License. By attending the Segments #2 & #3 of our scheduled Concealed Handgun License (CHL) class, the student will receive information and instruction on the safe-handling and storing of handguns, as well as appropriate shooting techniques. We do strongly recommend that basic handgun students attend (although it is not required) our Segment #1 session, if at all possible, as it covers New Mexico & Federal law/regulations regarding the ownership, possession, and use of firearms. Nevertheless, attendance at our Segment #2 class is requisite before attending Segment #3 at the firing range. See a broad course description below. Whether you are 101 or 21 years of age, if you understand the value/need to have a basic understanding in the safe use of a handgun, this basic handgun class instruction is a good starting point ... even if you have never fired a handgun before! If you would like to be included in our next scheduled class that is open for registration please contact us.
New Mexico Concealed Handgun License (CHL) Class Information:
Storm Tight schedules Concealed Handgun License (CHL) classes to accommodate groups of four (4) or more (e.g., family, friends, co-workers, social acquaintances, etc.) registering to attend at the same time, or those seeking private instruction. The group leader or private instruction party should contact us for dates and times that would be convenient to the group/individual and we will schedule a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) class.
After a group class has been scheduled, and if the group would like to invite others to attend those sessions, we will post the dates and times here on our web site. Other individuals (not affiliated with the group) that would like to attend those Concealed Handgun License (CHL) classes are encouraged to register once we post those available class dates. Our classes fill up quickly.
Private Concealed Handgun License (CHL) classes for individuals are always available. Typically, those that would prefer more individualized instruction on the proper use and handling of a handgun find the private lessons much more rewarding. We find this type of instruction most suitable for those with limited shooting experience, as well as spouses and family members that want to participate together.
Our classes are set up in "segments", each of which cover a different Concealed Handgun License (CHL) subject. Attendance at all four segments will be needed to successfully complete the minimum 15 hour Concealed Handgun License (CHL) course in accordance with New Mexico Concealed Handgun License (CHL) statutes. These session could be made up of several evening classes and a half-day class at the firing range; two (2) full day classes, such as on consecutive days, such as a Friday & Saturday, or two consecutive Fridays or two consecutive Saturdays, etc. There is flexibility in scheduling day and/or evening sessions to accommodate participants needs. Contact us for more information.
The New Mexico Concealed Handgun License Act requires a re-qualification certification for CHL holders within their 22nd and 26th month of an existing four year license. That re-qualification certification can be arranged by registering to attend one of our posted mid-term requalification sessions or one of our posted Segment #4 sessions, either of which meet at the firing range on the scheduled date.
The New Mexico Concealed Handgun License Act requires that current Concealed Handgun License (CHL) holders attend a four+ hour classroom and firing range certification before applying for a renewal of their CHL. That re-qualification certification can be arranged by registering to attend one of our posted Segment # 4 sessions. Contact us for more information.
We use a semi-private area of the firing range, which allows the students to be distanced, both visually and protectively, from other shooters that may be using other parts of the public range.
If you wish to schedule a group Concealed Handgun License (CHL) class, please contact us.
Basic Handgun Instruction
This is a class that focuses on basic firearm instruction in the fundamentals of safe-guarding and safe-handling of a firearm. This information and instruction is included in our Concealed Handgun License (CHL) class Segments # 2 & 3. Those interested in basic firearm instruction, but that do not currently desire to apply for the New Mexico Concealed Handgun License, should register for our Segments # 2 & 3 classes, but not Segments # 1 & 4. Included in this instruction, but not exclusive / limited to it by any means, will be the National Rifle Association's (NRA) First Steps Pistol Orientation material.
This course covers:
Types of handguns (e.g., revolver, semi-automatic, double action, single action, etc.);
Practices and procedures for safe conduct and handling of handguns, including the loading and unloading of revolvers and/or semi-automatic pistols;
Proper techniques when handling, storing and securing handguns;
Basics of maintaining handguns;
Child safety precautions;
Firing positions (e.g., Isosceles, Weaver);
Sight alignment and sight picture;
Trigger "press" versus "squeeze" or "pull";
Breathing and follow-through;
Possible firearm malfunctions (e.g., failure to feed, misfires, hang-fires, jams, stove-pipes, squib loads, etc.);
Live firing of practice rounds;
And much more! ...
Equipment needed for the class:
Handguns. Either semi-automatic and/or revolver of any caliber.
Ammunition. We suggest 50 to 100 rounds, and more if your budget allows, as there will be ample time for shooting to gain familiarity with the firearm(s) and to work on fundamentals essential for accuracy.
Holsters designed to securely hold the firearms for when the student is not at the firing line and shooting.
Eye & ear protection.
We use a semi-private area of the firing range, which allows the students to be distanced, both visually and protectively, from other shooters that may be using other parts of the public range.
Additionally, if the student decides after completing this basic handgun class that they would like to qualify for the New Mexico Concealed Handgun License (CHL), this class would satisfy at least half of the required 15+ hours needed to apply for their CHL. The final CHL qualifying hours (i.e., Segments # 1 & 4) would need to be through Storm Tight LLC (i.e., our basic handgun training is not transferrable to another instructor that may be offering CHL classes.). Those final CHL qualifying hours should be completed within 60 days after finishing this basic handgun class. A discounted cost for the final CHL qualifying sessions would be offered @ $25.00 for the instruction and certification plus an additional $15.00 firing range expense that would be needed to fire the category and caliber of handguns as covered under the CHL regulations.
